AI and AI-Assisted Tools Policy
Generative AI and AI-Assisted Tools
Engineering of Biomaterials allows the ethical and responsible use of generative AI and AI-assisted tools during manuscript preparation. All submitted work must remain the authors’ own, and the authors are fully accountable for its accuracy and originality.
1. Human responsibility
Authors are responsible for all content in their manuscript. AI tools cannot replace scientific judgment, critical evaluation, or original thinking. All outputs from AI tools must be reviewed and verified by the authors.
2. Acceptable use
AI tools may be used for language editing, organization of text, or other basic writing assistance. They must not be used to create research data, fabricate results, or generate references that cannot be verified.
3. Confidentiality and copyright
Authors must not upload unpublished findings, personal data, or copyrighted materials into AI systems unless the tool’s terms of use clearly allow confidential and secure handling of such content.
4. Images and figures
AI-generated or AI-modified scientific images are not allowed unless these tools are part of the research method itself. Such use must be clearly described in the Methods section. AI-generated artwork for covers or graphical abstracts is not permitted.
5. Authorship
AI tools cannot be listed as authors. Authorship requires human contribution, accountability, and approval of the final version.
6. Disclosure for authors
If AI tools were used in the process of manuscript preparation, authors must include a short statement at the end of the manuscript describing which tool was used and for what purpose. Routine grammar or spell-checking does not require disclosure.
AI Use by Reviewers
Use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools is not permitted in any part of the peer review process. Reviewers must not upload manuscripts or manuscript fragments into AI systems, generate review text with AI tools, or use AI systems to evaluate or summarize the work.
Peer review must be conducted entirely by the invited reviewer, ensuring confidentiality, independent judgment, and protection of authors’ unpublished work.
